How to pick fresh Fenugreek Leaves
Tender leaves, bright green, no flowers — that's fenugreek at its best
How to pick
Look for small, tender, bright green clover-shaped trifoliate leaves on slim firm stems. Younger bunches are best — fenugreek turns bitter and woody as it ages. Reject any bunch flowering or going to seed — leaves turn unpleasantly bitter once flowers appear. The cut at the stems should be clean and fresh-looking.
Red flags
- Yellowing, especially at leaf undersides
- Thick fibrous stems — over-mature plant
- Wilted leaves or wet/slimy stem base
How to store
Don't wash until use. Wrap unwashed bunch loosely in a paper towel inside a perforated bag, refrigerate in the crisper. Lasts 4–6 days. Pre-washed and roughly chopped, it freezes well in flat zip bags for 2–3 months.
