How to pick fresh Basil
Sweet-floral scent, zero black spots, stems standing up — that's the bunch to pick
How to pick
Look for leaves with a smooth waxy sheen and no black spotting, upright non-drooping stems, and a strong sweet-floral aroma rising from the bunch — the sheen and the smell hold whatever color the variety is, sweet-basil green or Opal purple. Smaller upper leaves are usually more aromatic than oversized ones. Sweet basil bruises easily — handle by the stem, not the leaves.
Red flags
- Black or brown spots on leaves (chilling injury — basil hates cold below ~50 °F (~10 °C))
- Wilted, drooping bunch — lost turgor
- Yellowing along leaf edges
- Fermented or sour aroma instead of sweet-floral
How to store
Do NOT refrigerate sweet basil — chilling below ~50 °F (~10 °C) causes black spots within 1–3 days. Stand the bunch in a glass of water on the counter, loose plastic bag draped over the top, change water daily. Lasts 4–6 days. Tulsi (holy basil) is a different species — covered separately if at all.
