How to pick a ripe Pomegranate
Lift it — heavy means arils packed with juice
How to pick
Lift it — a ripe pomegranate feels noticeably heavy for its size because the arils are full of juice. Look for deep red, glossy, taut skin — the natural look of a well-filled fruit. A ripe pomegranate may show a very slight flattening at the sides from internal aril pressure. Light weight and dull or shriveling skin are the signs to walk away from.
Red flags
- Feels light for its size — arils are underdeveloped or dried out
- Skin looks dull, matte, or beginning to shrivel — early moisture loss
- Small soft spot near the calyx or base
- Calyx (crown) is wet, mushy, or shows mold — sign of internal heart rot
How to store
Whole pomegranates keep at room temperature for up to a week, or refrigerated for 1–2 months. Once cut, store arils in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, or freeze for up to 3 months.
