How to pick a ripe Strawberry
Red all the way to the cap, sweet scent when you lift the carton — that's peak strawberry
How to pick
Bright red from tip to stem — no white or green shoulders. Leaves should be fresh green and firmly attached. Lift the carton; a sweet fragrance is the best ripeness signal.
Red flags
- Dull, matte surface instead of glossy sheen — fresh berries have a natural shine
- Limp, brown, or missing leaves
- Fuzzy white mold or wet soft patches; stains on the carton
When will it be ripe?
- White cap · stays tart White or pale green right around the cap, with red only towards the tip.
- Red to cap · pale ring Red almost all the way up with a pale ring still showing at the shoulders, skin glossy.
- Red throughout · sweet smell Bright red from tip to cap with a glossy sheen, leaves fresh green and firmly attached.
- Dull & dark · soft spots The shine has gone matte, dark crimson patches are spreading, and the leaves are limp and browning.
How to store
Do not wash until eating — moisture invites mold. Refrigerate immediately at 32–36 °F (0–2 °C) in the original vented clamshell or a container with some air circulation. Best within 2–3 days at typical home refrigerator temperatures; up to 7 days under optimal cold storage.
